What can I plant now for spring??

I live in Alabama. I dont want perinnals or just plants for spring and summer exclusively. We are moving into a new home and I want to do as much yardwork as I can before it gets cold (which is usually the end of November). I just dont know that much about greenery and/or flowers, so I need low maintenance!!

What can I plant now for spring??
You may want to consider that now is a good time to simply prepare your garden. I know you want to begin planting things RIGHT NOW, but you might need patience! There ARE some things which can be planted in the autumn (several bulbs, and trees also) but take the opportunity of the lovely autumn days to plan next year's plot. Find out where you want your garden to grow and clear it out. Plan a border? footpath? clear the rocks (this may or may not be necessary, depending on the type of garden you want)

Good September - October activities:

Feed any junipers, azaleas, rhododendrons and blueberries

Make mum cuttings

set out azaleas

PLANT BULBS : CROCUS, DAFFODIL AND TULIP!

mix potting soil (1/3 portion sand, 1/3 garden soil, 1/3 milled sphagnum moss - store in lidded plastic container)

Remember, gardening is 40% hard work, 50% patience, and 10% joy!!

Hope this helps :-)

PS! Oooooh! I just had another thought - you could plant strawberries now!!!!
Reply:For flowers plant daffodils, tulips Narcissus, etc. These bulbs are usually sold in the fall at your local home store. They fade in the warmer weather

Fall is a good time to plant trees. Keep them watered while it's still warm

You can plant most any shrub. Spirea gets beautiful flowers in the spring in white or pink.

My favorite are Carpet Roses. They bloom all summer %26amp; are almost maintence free.

Hosta is a beautiful shade lover that is extremely hardy and is beautiful spring thru fall

Good Luck!
Reply:Pansies are great this time of year and should do well throughout all of winter in Alabama. You should aslo be able to plant bulbs of all kinds about November and early December. Tulips are easy easy to grow! Good Luck!
Reply:Plant bulbs! This is the perfect time of year to do it, and they are self-maintaining. Irises are beautiful, but only bloom in the spring. Same for crocuses, tulips, hyacinths and daffodils. Gladiolas are summer blooming. All of them have pretty foliage, but only the irises will have foliage all year. You can also plant chrysanthemums now. They are bushy all year and bloom in the fall. For continuous blooms, plant pansies now. They will winter over and bloom spring and summer. If you mix and match these flowers you can have a low maintenance garden in the spring, and flowers from one or the other all year long.
Reply:Fall is a great time to plant trees and shrubs.

Also, flower bulbs.

Cetain veggies, too If your winter's don't get too frozen, almost anything that' mildly frost-tolerant. Lettuces, spinach, kale, cabbages, broccoli, you might even try carrots and turnip and other roots crops - they might not germinate for a long time, but they'll start growing when it's right for them.
