I planted them in a seed tray and now they are about 10 cm high and look a bit like green beans that want to climb, Where should I plant them? What can you tell me about them. I am in South Africa and it is the begining of spring here (Pretoria)
My daughter gave me small dark seeds about the size if a pea. She said they are 'moon flowers'?
I love moon flowers. They're climbers and have a white flower that opens at night. Plant them on a trellis in the spring.
Mine resembled morning glories and their white flower was only about 4 inches/10 centimetres across. They climbed up my 10 foot trellis easily.
Mine were also an annual where I used to live in a much more extreme climate than I do now. If I were you, I'd dead head the blooms after they were spent and only let a few go to seed at the end of your growing season.
The only other thing I can tell you is you're supposed to soak the seeds overnight before you plant them. You're beyond that if you have seedlings.
Reply:agree with your daughter. It will stimulate her imagination and creativity. Your best bet is to plant them outside either near trellace or put a stick or bamboo rod or somthing next to it so it can climb. If it looks like peas/beans and the seed looked about the size of erm maybe, a pea im gonna hazard a guess at it being some form of pea or bean, but can't be sure unless i can see it. :P good luck with your plant
Reply:You need to plant them somewhere they can vine up, like a wall or a porch support. They are similar to morning glory flowers, but are white and open up only at night. They have a lovely smell. Moon flowers are also annuals, so you'll have to replant them next year. They will drop seeds, so keep looking for them after the flowers die so you don't have rebuy them.
Reply:the moon flowers that i know of get to be very large. about2 feet across. they have a white large blossom that opens at night and is very fragrant. they r a real fun plant. they thrive in full sun...
