I have blackeyed susans and shasta daisies in my garden. Do I cut them back now or wait until spring?

The flowers are pretty dead now. Do I have to let them alone so the seeds will fall, or can I cut them back so the bed looks nicer?

Cut them back! Shasta's and Susan's do not need to grow back in the spring from their seeds, they are perennials, they come back from the root. If you want more plants from your stock, just dig and divide in early fall or early spring. The botanical name for shasta's is Chrysanthemum x Becky, and for susan's it's

Reply:I usually do a little of both. Cut some back and leave some for the birds.
Reply:Gather their seeds if you like. Shastas are biannual and won't bloom the first year you plant the seeds. They both will reseed on their own. Been mowing mine down to have beautiful surprises of flower faces all year. Have fun.

Reply:*cut them back now and get rid of the seed heads otherwise you will have an entire bed of these. They both spread like crazy and hard to keep in control.
