Bought crepe myrtles at beach last summer. Planted them & looked good. Had only bare branches this spring.?

Then reddish leaves started from root. Now have bushes of reddish leaves about 2 ft high, no buds. Cut off the dead branches. Leaves are pretty, but would love some flowers. Does this sound like crepe myrtle? is this how it starts or am I wasting my time?

Crape myrtles (Lagerstroemia indica) are hardy only in the warmer parts of USDA Zone 7 and warmer. If you live in a colder climate, the above ground growth most likely froze and the plant grew back from the roots. However, if you live in its preferred climate range and the plant still froze back, it could be that the crape myrtle was planted late in the season and did not have adequate time to establish itself and harden off before winter could do its damage.

The good news: crape myrtles bloom on new wood. By the end of the summer or early fall, you will most likely have flowers on the end of the stems. Some people in the north grow crape myrtles as die-back perennials. This is one option. Another option is to mulch the plant heavily during the winter and hope for the best.
Reply:Crepe Myrtles are very latitude sensitive you may have moved then to far north, they normally don't handle a freeze well.
Reply:Sounds like the main branches died......but it's coming back from the bottom......wait and see if it flowers theyu way it should.....then just give it time to regrow to the size you want. You might have to train it and prune it to get it the way you want.
