I live out in the desert and during winter/spring...the weather is beautiful...but during the summer...forget it! heats reaching 120 degrees! so...any advice?
Any advice for planting pretty flowers that will stay alive in the desert? (BESIDES CACTUS!)?
Hey Nessa,
Pots, with lots of Peat Moss to retain moisture. Keep them wet. Then just about any hardy flowers will tolerate your spring and fall. You could take the pots in for the summer, or make a trellace to cover them during the summer. Bougainvillea glabra would cover the trellace, and provide very pretty little red flowers. If there is a shady side of your home, put them there to keep out of the sun.
Ah, La Tuna (prickly pear) is so beautiul... Flowers in the Spring, and red pears in the fall...
Heat-Tolerant Flowers
Portulaca (moss rose) is among the showiest and easiest of these types to grow. Both single and double forms produce blooms of many brilliant hues. Portulaca adapts to poor soil, and reseeds easily. Lantana thrives and flowers well in hot conditions, even growing in the narrow spaces between concrete and brick sidewalks. Gazania blooms freely throughout summer, thriving on heat and drought. It’s very effective in rock gardens. Among other flowers that tolerate hot and dry locations: gaillardia, periwinkle, anthemis, yarrow, California poppy, red flax, candytuft, African daisy (arctotis) and calliopsis.
Be sure to put some heat tolerant trees for shade, providing further protection from the Sun. You may need to buy good soil for your plantings - desert sand is YUCK.
