How comes my laburnum never flowers?

i have a laburnum tree that i grew from seed around six years ago, it now stands taller than the house. every spring i expect it to blossom, but it always lets me down! is it too young to flower? (sorry if that sounds silly). would a severe prunning induce flowering next year? should i just cut the ruddy thing down? any ideas would be much appreciated. thanks

How comes my laburnum never flowers?
My next door neighbour has one and there is also a laburnum down the road from where i live.

My neighbour said that hers didnt start flowering until it was about 10-11 years old, and the one down the road i would estimate is about the same age as yours but that one has never flowered either.

Some trees/plants have to reach maturity until they start producing seeds/flowers so i would say you will have to wait atleast another 3/4 years first , its worth the wait though :P
Reply:There are various reasons for laburnums not flowering. One is mechanical damage to the shoots due to late frost. Another is slugs and snails, which actually climb to the top of a laburnum, and hide at the top, coming downwards to eat rather than going up. Don your wellies, grab a torch, go out and have a look, and I bet you you'll find some snails feeding up there. Also check that you're not over-feeding it, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers. It's very common for overfed shrubs and woody plants not to flower. Don't give it general fertiliser, or mulch it with manure. Feed with a high potash food now, and go snail hunting. :-)
Reply:My mum grew one from seed and it took ages to flower - more than 6 years - so give it a bit more time.

My mum cursed hers every year but now its a beautiful tree, some years it flowers better than others but it always does flower.

I know you see some young plants that flower and it is annoying.
